How to Check a China Used Car Listing Before Paying a Deposit

A practical inspection and evidence checklist for verifying a China used car listing before sending a supplier deposit.

A polished listing is only the start of a used-car purchase. Before sending a deposit, an overseas buyer should connect the listing title, current vehicle evidence, condition details, quotation and document plan to the same vehicle.

Start with identity, not appearance

Confirm the brand, model, trim, production year, fuel type, transmission and drive layout. If the vehicle is used, request the mileage and ask whether the photos show the exact unit. A stock image cannot prove condition.

Evidence What to check Common warning sign
Exterior photos All sides, panel gaps, glass, lights and wheel condition Only one promotional angle is available
Interior photos Seats, dashboard, controls, screens and trim wear Interior belongs to a different trim or color
Dashboard media Mileage, warning lights and vehicle status Odometer is missing or unreadable
VIN/chassis proof Identifier matches the transaction documents where available Supplier avoids connecting the quote to a unit
Cold-start/video check Engine start, screen functions and visible warning messages Only edited short clips are supplied

Separate cosmetic issues from transaction risk

Minor paint wear or cabin marks can be priced and accepted. Identity problems, unexplained dashboard warnings, missing documents or inconsistent specifications are different: they can affect registration, resale or the buyer’s ability to receive the intended car.

Ask the supplier to write all agreed condition points into the buying record. Verbal promises are difficult to verify after dispatch.

Check the quote against the listing

  • The title and trim should match the evidence.
  • The mileage should be stated consistently.
  • The FOB basis should identify the handover point.
  • The quote should state its validity period.
  • The document and inspection scope should be listed.

Use a two-stage confirmation

Stage one: shortlist the model and receive an indicative quotation. Stage two: confirm the exact unit, current media, condition notes, final price and document scope before deposit.

FAQ

How many photos should a used-car listing have?

There is no universal number, but the set should cover exterior, interior, dashboard and identifying details. Coverage matters more than repeated angles.

Can I rely on the listing mileage?

Treat it as unconfirmed until dashboard or inspection evidence supports it.

When should the deposit be paid?

Only after the buyer understands the vehicle identity, evidence, quotation basis, seller terms and expected document process.
